Resources for Advisors

Advisor Requirements

Any faculty or staff member at the University Arkansas is eligible to be an RSO advisor if:

  • they are a fully time employee, or
  • they are part time employee who is not concurrently pursuing a graduate degree, unless it is part of their position description.

University Advisor Expectations

  • Be familiar with the purpose, constitution and activities of the RSO for which you are advising.
  • Assist the RSO in identifying goals and help the members and officers clarify their areas of responsibility.
  • Participate in all major organizational planning.
  • Observe and evaluate student performance in regards to his or her involvement with the RSO.
  • Assure that accurate and consistent records are kept by the RSO officers and approved methods of handling organizational finances are followed.
  • Be familiar with University policies and procedures as they pertain to officer eligibility and be sensitive to the students' academic performance.
  • Provide information to University officials concerning the RSO when requested.
  • Be available as a mentor to organization members to assist them with personal and organizational problems and decisions.
  • Act as a source of general information regarding UA policies and procedures.
  • Teach basic leadership skills and provide the officers with elements of good organizational and administrative practice.
  • Remember to have fun!

RSO Registration Information

  • Registration is open year round, however RSOs are asked to re-register for the upcoming year during the last 6 weeks of classes.
  • The registration process must be completed by students.

Advisor Development Series

The Center for Leadership and Community Engagement offers advisor workshops aimed at increasing knowledge, support and understanding of the RSO advisor role. In addition, this program offers opportunities to network with other university professionals and advisors who have a rich knowledge base of advising experience.
Here are the workshops for spring 2008:

Crossing Borders – Facilitating Diversity Conversations

  • Description: This presentation is designed to discuss information that can be used to assist those in a campus community charged with providing services to a diverse population of students.
  • Date and Location: Thursday, February 21 (12:00pm-1:00pm) AU504
  • Presenter:  Cedric Kenner, Director, University of Arkansas – Multicultural Center
  • Presenter Bio: Cedric attended Southern Illinois on a football scholarship where he received his undergraduate and graduate degree. After graduating, he worked as an athletic advisor for Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and then at Illinois State University.  After spending time in higher education, he went into the United States Navy as a Military Police Officer specializing in anti-terrorism training and small arms instruction.  Following his military career, he was fortunate to become an employee of the University of Arkansas where he served in various leadership roles throughout campus.  With dreams and high expectations on shaping the lives of students, he was been given the prestigious honor of becoming the director of the University of Arkansas Multicultural Center.  With that being said, he is also a doctoral student at the University of Arkansas in the Adult Education program.
